Counseling with Gladys

I work with parents, children, teens, and adults. The concerns that bring people to therapy look different, so the work does too.

You can read more below about the support I offer and what working together may look like.

Look underneath the behavior, not just at the behavior

Parenting is hard, especially when you’re trying everything you know and still wondering whether you’re getting it right.

Maybe your child is anxious, angry, withdrawing, struggling at school, or reacting in ways you don’t quite understand. Maybe you set a boundary and question yourself five minutes later. Or maybe you keep having the same argument and can’t seem to get out of the cycle.

Together, we can slow those moments down and look beyond the behavior itself. What might your child be communicating? What tends to happen before things escalate? What does your child need from you, and what do you need too?

We may work on communication, boundaries, understanding strong emotions, and repairing after difficult moments. There’s also room to talk about your own stress, your reactions, and the expectations you carry as a parent.

My work with parents draws on my counseling experience, my work with children and families in schools and community settings, and my training as a Registered Circle of Security Parenting Facilitator.

If you’re looking for individual counseling for your child or teen rather than support for yourself as a parent, see the Children & Teens section below.

Therapy should fit the person

One of the things I value about therapy is that it’s shaped around you, your needs, and your situation.

Depending on what you need, our work may draw from Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), psychodynamic and narrative approaches, mindfulness, trauma-informed care, and strengths-based interventions.

Sometimes we may look closely at a thought that keeps taking over. Other times, we may explore how an earlier experience is affecting something in your life now, practice a different way of responding, or simply give something difficult the time and space it needs.

When it fits the work and is appropriate and permitted through the practice, I also include creative and expressive approaches. Art, music, writing, storytelling, mindfulness, or movement can sometimes help us explore experiences that are hard to reach through conversation alone.

Whatever we try, I’ll explain what we’re doing and why, and I want your feedback along the way. If something doesn’t feel helpful, we’ll try something different.
